Garyu Sanso: An Apparatus of Space for the Individual

川辺に佇む数寄屋。
個人の在り様を確立し、守るための空間。
大きな松の一枚板が継ぎ目なく広がり、廊下の松の一枚板には意図的に溝を施している（一見するとよくある廊下に見える）。
杉の一枚板には絵が描かれ、竹の網代天井──船底のような円形で、午前には川面の光が反射して水面を携える。
襖にはコウモリの意匠、縁側の釘の一部には作り手の名前が刻まれているなど、至る所に「洒落」が利いている。
「書院」というルールを少しずつ自分なりに変え、自分らしい場所をつくり、そこに客人を招いてもてなす。
個人ベースの付き合いを実現するための〈空間装置〉。

Garyu Sanso
A sukiya-style retreat poised by the riverside—an architectural space conceived to establish and protect one’s personal way of being.
A single, massive plank of pine stretches across the floor without a join; another pine board in the corridor carries deliberate grooves, so at first glance the hallway seems ordinary.
A cedar slab has a painting brushed onto it; the bamboo lattice ceiling—arched like a boat’s hull—catches the morning river light and brings a shimmer of water inside.
Bats adorn the sliding doors, and on one veranda nail the carpenter’s name is carved. Everywhere, playful wit is at work.
By gently bending the traditional shoin rules, the owner shaped a place unmistakably their own, where guests can be welcomed and entertained.
It is an “apparatus of space” that makes relationships possible on a purely personal scale.
